Question

I work in a hotel in the information department. The nature of my work means that I have to suggest some restaurants and entertainment venues where there are female dancers and singers to the guests at the hotel, and I have to make bookings for them in those places. Hence I need to have complete information about those places, such as their addresses, hours of operation, the entertainment programmes that they offer and so on. I also have to know about the films that are shown in the cinemas and theatres, and other things about other entertainment venues. Is this haraam? Please note that I do not go to these places, and I am married and have children and I have no other source of income.

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

If the matter is as you have described, then this work is haraam, because it involves guiding others to haraam things, and this is cooperating in sin and transgression. Allaah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Help you one another in Al‑Birr and At‑Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is Severe in punishment”

[al-Maa’idah 5:2].

The one who guides others to evil is like the one who does it, just as the one who guides people to good is like the one who does it. The one who calls or guides people to sin will have a burden of sin like theirs, because of the report narrated by Muslim (2674) from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever calls others to guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. And whoever calls others to misguidance will have a burden of sin like that of those who follow it, without it detracting from their burden in the slightest.”

If the one who keeps quiet about evil is a partnew in the sin, then how about the one who guides others to it and shows them the way?!

What you must do is give up working in this field and move to another job that is permissible, whether it is in the hotel or elsewhere. You should realise that if a person gives up something for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will compensate him with something better than it, as it says in a saheeh report from our Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him). And that which is with Allaah cannot be attained except by obeying Him, as the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said:

“The Holy Spirit (Jibreel) has inspired to me that no soul will die until it has completed its appointed term and received its provision in full, so fear Allaah and do not be desperate in seeking provision, and no one of you should be temped to seek provision by means of committing sin if it is slow in coming to him, for that which is with Allaah can only be attained by obeying Him.” Narrated by Abu Na’eem in al-Hilyah from the hadeeth of Abu Umaamah; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 2085.

And Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).

3. And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allaah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allaah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allaah has set a measure for all things”

[al-Allaah 65:2-3]

We ask Allaah to guide us and you.

And Allaah knows best.
