Question 82219

I have a friend whom I reward to encourage him to memorize Qur’aan. My question is: will I have any reward for that?.

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

Memorizing Qur’aan is one of the greatest acts of worship, because it is reciting the words of Allaah, repeating them, and focusing on them. It is well known that reading one letter of the book of Allaah brings a tenfold reward, as al-Tirmidhi (2910) narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever reads one letter of the Book of Allaah will have one hasanah for it, and each hasanah is a tenfold reward. I do not say that alif-laam-meem is a letter, rather alif is a letter, laam is a letter and meem is a letter.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

Muslim (804) narrated that Abu Umaamah al-Baahili (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “Read the Qur’aan, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection interceding for its companions. Read the two bright ones, al-Baqarah and Soorat Aal ‘Imraan, for they will come on the Day of Resurrection like two clouds or shadows, or like two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading on behalf of their companions. Read Soorat al-Baqarah for reciting it regularly is a blessing and forsaking it is a loss, and the magicians cannot withstand it.”

Al-Tirmidhi (2914) and Abu Dawood (1464) narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’aan: ‘Recite and ascend, recite as you used to recite in the world, and your station will be at the last verse you recite.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (5/281, no. 2240), after which he said:

It should be noted that what is meant by “the companion of the Qur’aan” is the one who memorizes it by heart, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Let the people be led in prayer by the one who has most knowledge of Qur’aan,” i.e., the one who has memorized most Qur’aan. Differentiation in status in Paradise will be based on how much one memorized in this world, not on how much he reads as some people imagine. This shows that the one who memorizes Qur’aan enjoys a special virtue, but that is subject to the condition that his memorizing it be for the sake of Allaah, may He be blessed and exalted, and not for the sake of worldly gain or money, for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Most of the hypocrites of my ummah will be reciters.” End quote.

Secondly:

Whoever helps someone to memorize Qur’aan and encourages him by rewarding him and other means is doing a great good deed, and there is the hope that he will have a reward like that of the one who memorizes and recites, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever calls others to guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow him, without it detracting from their reward in the slightest.” Narrated by Muslim (2674). And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever tells another about something good is like the one who does it.”

According to al-Tirmidhi (2670): “The one who tells another about something good is like the one who does it.”

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

We ask Allaah to make you steadfast and help you, and to help your friend to memorize His Holy Book.

And Allaah knows best.
