Question

I work in a company that manufactures clothing of all types, but most of what it makes is clothing for women and girls that is worn inside and outside the home, which it sells in the factory stores. The salary comes from the stores’ sales of the clothing made by our factory and other factories. What is the ruling on working as an accountant in this company?.

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

There is nothing wrong with manufacturing things that are basically permissible, even if they have haraam uses too, such as clothing, make up, perfumes and so on.

The basic principle concerning things that may be used in halaal ways or haraam ways is that it is permissible to sell them except to one who it is known or is thought most likely will use them in haraam ways. This has been discussed previously in the answers to questions number 102214, 75007 and 85000

Based on that, there is nothing wrong with you working as an accountant in this company, but if it becomes clear to you that most of the clothes are being bought by people who will use them for haraam purposes, in that case it is not permissible for you to work with them.

If you are not sure or do not know about the purchasers, then the basic principle is that it is permissible to sell them, so long as they can be used for permissible purposes.

And Allah knows best.
