Question

Is it necessary to use the hand when cleaning oneself after relieving oneself, or is it sufficient to use toilet paper or a hand-held spray?

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

What is required after relieving oneself is to remove whatever impurity may be in that place, whether it is removed with water or something else, such as pebbles, toilet paper, or cloth, although using water is better. This has been explained previously in the answers to questions no. 111813 and 10257.

It is permissible to use only the hand-held spray if it will remove whatever impurity is on the anus and leave no trace of it.

When cleaning oneself by using pebbles, toilet paper or cloth, it is stipulated that one should wipe three times or more, until the place becomes clean.

That is because of the report narrated by Muslim, 262, from Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: Our Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade us to face towards the qiblah when defecating or urinating, or to clean ourselves with our right hands, or to clean ourselves with less than three pebbles, or to clean ourselves with dung or bones.

It is permissible to clean oneself with one many-sided pebble or a large cloth, wiping with the edge of it three times, if that will remove the impurity; otherwise it is obligatory to wipe with it more times until it removes the impurity.

And Allah knows best.
