Is it permissible for a woman to learn the Holy Quran with a group of sisters on the Internet, from a shaykh in a room on the Internet? Is it permissible for her to memorise during the monthly class?
Praise be to Allah.
Firstly:
What is best and safest is for you to learn the Quran from a woman, because that is furthest removed from temptation and its causes. If that is not possible, but it is possible to make do with memorising from a recording or computer, with the cooperation of these sisters for the purpose of review and follow-up, then that is good, and it is better than learning from a man.
Secondly:
If there is a need for a man to teach the women, either because there is no female teacher or because he is very well versed and knowledgeable, and he is teaching them the rules of recitation, then there is nothing wrong with that if attention is paid to the following guidelines:
We should also point out that a woman’s voice is not ‘awrah according to the more correct of the two scholarly views, on condition that she does not make her voice soft and alluring.
It says in Kashshaf al-Qina‘ (5/15), which is a Hanbali book: The voice of a non-mahram is not ‘awrah, as was mentioned in al-Furu‘ and elsewhere, and this is the more correct scholarly opinion. It is haram for him to find pleasure in listening, even if it is recitation of Quran, for fear of temptation. She should recite quietly if a non-mahram can hear her. End quote.
It says in Mughni al-Muhtaj (4/210), which is a book of Shafa‘i jurisprudence: The woman’s voice is not ‘awrah and it is permissible to listen to it if there is no risk of temptation, but it is recommended to make the voice sound rough and deep if there is a knock at the door, so the woman should not answer in a soft voice; rather she may make her voice sound rough by putting the back of her hand over her mouth. End quote.
Thirdly:
It is permissible for a menstruating woman to recite Quran and memorize it, and repeat it from memory, without touching the Mus-haf. It is also permissible for her to touch the Mus-haf with a barrier, and to touch a book of Tafsir (commentary) and read Quran from it.
