I would like to call my children – in sha Allaah – Hibah for a girl and Rida for a boy. What are the meanings of these two names? Is it permissible for me to call my children by these names?.
Praise be to Allah.
There is no apparent reason why these names should not be used, for they have acceptable meanings that do not go against sharee’ah. These are the meanings of these two names:
Hibah means giving something for nothing in return (a gift). One of the names of Allaah is al-Wahhaab (the Bestower), i.e., the One Who gives abundantly for nothing in return, may He be glorified and exalted.
Rida has a number of meanings, such as:
1-The opposite of wrath or anger
2-The one with whom one is pleased
3-Acceptance
4-Conviction
