`Eid prayer is not obligatory for women, but it is Sunnah. Women should offer `Eid prayer in the prayer-place with the Muslims, because the Prophet enjoined women to do that.

The Sunnah acts and etiquettes of ‘Eid include:
1. Making ghusl before ‘Eid prayer.
2. Eating before going out to pray on ‘Eid al-Fitr and after the prayer on ‘Eid al-Adha.
3. Takbir on the day of ‘Eid
4. Offering congratulations
5. Adorning oneself on the occasion of ‘Eid.
6. Going to the prayer by one route and returning by another.

How to pray ‘Eid prayer:
1- In the first rak’ah, the imam should say Takbirat al-ihram after which he should say six or seven more takbirs. Then he should recite al-Fatihah, and recite Surat Qaf.
2- In the second rak’ah, he should stand up saying takbir, and he should say takbir five times, and recite Surat al-Fatihah then Surat al-Qamar.

Scholars differed concerning the ruling on ‘Eid prayers: 1- it is a confirmed Sunnah; 2- it is a communal obligation; and 3- it is obligatory for men.

Doing ghusl on ‘Eid is recommended and not compulsory. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did ghusl on the day of ‘Eid. There is nothing wrong with doing ghusl for ‘Eid before Fajr prayer if that will make it easier to go out to the ‘Eid prayer.

Sunnah acts during `Eid include: 1- reciting Takbir during the night of `Eid, 2- eating an odd number of dates before leaving for the `Eid prayer, 3- wearing your best clothes, 4- doing Ghusl for the `Eid prayer, 5- offering the `Eid prayer, 6- paying Zakat Al-Fitr, 7- greeting and embracing one another, 8- going out to the `Eid prayer by one route and return by another…

The issue of ‘Eid takbir is broad in scope because the command is to say takbir in general, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not single out any particular format of takbirat.

The fuqaha’ differed regarding the number of people required to do the Eid prayer. Some of them, such as the Hanbalis, stipulated that there should be forty people. Others, such as the Shaafa‘is, said that it is permissible for one who is alone to offer the Eid prayer.

The view that is more likely to be correct is that the number required is three.

It is permissible to offer greetings and congratulations on ` `Eid, and there is no specific greeting. Rather the greetings that people customarily use are permissible so long as no sin is involved.

Offering congratulations for `Eid should come after the `Eid prayer. But if one offers such congratulations before the `Eid begins, to be the first to give this greeting to his friend, it seems that there is nothing wrong with that.

There is no specific Du`a prescribed after `Eid prayer. Instead, it is Sunnah to recite Takbir, Tasbih, Tahlil, and Tahmid on the night before `Eid and on the morning of `Eid, until the Khutbah on the day of `Eid Al-Fitr, and until the end of the days of Tashriq on `Eid Al-Ad-ha, as is also prescribed during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

If you reach the place of the `Eid prayer while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah, you should listen to the Khutbah, then you should make up the `Eid prayer after that.

While Qiyam Al-Layl is encouraged every night, the Hadith regarding its specific virtue on the night before `Eid is either inauthentic or fabricated. Scholars have classified it as unreliable. Nevertheless, praying on this night—as on any other—remains a recommended act of worship.

There is no Adhan or Iqamah for the `Eid prayer, as was proven in the Sunnah, but some scholars said that a call may be given for it by saying “As-Salatu Jami`ah”. But there is no evidence for this view.

Takbir in unison before ‘Eid prayer is an innovation because there is no evidence for it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever does an action that is not part of this matter of ours will have it rejected.” What `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did is not evidence for reciting takbir in unison; rather what `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did was to say takbir by himself, and when the people heard him they said takbir, each one by himself. This does not indicate that they all said takbir in unison.
