Ruling on surgery to remove a defect from the face

Question

I would like to know the ruling on having surgery to remove some marks from my face that have been very visible from the time I was a boy, and they affect my psychology, especially when meeting with people.

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

Having surgery to remove some disfigurement that may appear in the body is permissible, so long as the surgery will not lead to a greater harm affecting the patient’s body or health. If it is proven, based on medical opinion, that no harm will result from such surgery, there is nothing wrong with doing it.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz was asked:

I am a young man, eighteen years old, and am about to get married. I have a scar on my face, which makes me feel shy in front of people. Is it permissible for me to have surgery on my face to make me not look disfigured in front of people?

He (may Allah have mercy on him) replied:

If there is any scar from smallpox on the face, or anything else on the face that disfigures it, if the doctors have any way of removing these scars and relieving the patient of this disfigurement, there is nothing wrong with that…" (Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb, by Ibn Baaz  20/307).

The Permanent Committee were asked about a young man who had a visible protrusion in his breasts.

They replied:

It is permissible for you to have cosmetic surgery to remove this protrusion, if it is most likely that the procedure will be successful and will not cause any harm that will outweigh or equal the benefit sought. And Allah is the source of strength." (Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah, Vol.1  25/63).
