Question

I work as an accountant for a company in Canada. One of my clients is a restaurant that sells food and alcohol. I am not involved buying and selling the alcoholic drinks, but as I am an accountant, I get the invoices, which include invoices for alcohol, that I have to enter into the system in order to complete the accounting process. I do not receive my salary directly from the restaurant; rather my salary is paid by the accounting company that I work for, and it is very difficult for me to give up this job, because it is the job that I always dreamed of and I waited nearly 7 years to get this job, and I have learned many new skills. Is it possible for me to choose to work with clients such as these, and to donate part of my salary to charitable organizations in order to keep my salary halaal.

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

It is not permissible for an accountant to enter invoices for alcohol sales into the system, because that comes under the heading of keeping quiet about evils, and promoting the sale of something haraam and helping it to continue, by learning about its returns and financial benefits.

It is haraam to help with alcohol in any way whatsoever. In the hadith of Anas ibn Maalik it says: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) cursed ten people with regard to alcohol: The one who presses [the grapes, etc.], the one for whom it is pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who pours it, the one who sells it, the one who consumes its price, the one who purchases it, and the one for whom it is purchased.

Narrated by at-Tirmidhi (1295) and Abu Dawood (3674).

Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty”

[al-Maa’idah 5:2].

So try not to enter these invoices, so that someone else can do that.

That is not possible, then look for another job, and until you find a new job, dispose of as much of your salary as is commensurate with the haraam work.

And Allah knows best.
