Firstly:
There are many claims of this nature from men and women, but those that are proven to be true are few. How often have we seen and heard people claiming things that have no basis in reality. Hence we do not deal with these issues on the basis of what someone claims is happening to him; rather we deal with them on the basis of what is actually happening.
From studying such experiences that people claim to suffer and finding out about the people who make such claims, we found that the cause of that is one of several things:
- These claims are no more than illusions and imaginary things that have no basis in reality.
Ustadh Usamah ibn Yasin al-Ma`ani (may Allah grant him success) said, advising those who do ruqyah:
Try to ascertain whether the issues go beyond the scope of the Shaytan’s toying with people and his attempts to make his victim think that he is suffering from epilepsy, black magic and the like in order to prevent him from doing righteous deeds and acts of worship, and from remembering Allah.
Minhaj ash-Shar` fi `Ilaj al-Mass was-Sara`, p. 41.
- It is a case of mental or physical illness.
Shaykh `Abdullah at-Tayyar and Shaykh Sami al-Mubarak (may Allah preserve them) said:
There may be some symptoms of the touch of a jinni, black magic and the evil eye that are shared with some cases of mental or physical illness. For example, one of the symptoms of the touch of a jinni is anxiety, but can we say that everyone who suffers from anxiety is affected by the touch of a jinni? A person’s mental condition may be the cause of anxiety in many cases, and turning away from the Most Merciful leads to anxiety. Allah, may He be Exalted, says:
{And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind} [Ta-Ha 20:124].
Epilepsy may be caused by a jinni’s touch, or it may be caused by physical illness.
Fat-h al-Haqq al-Mubin fi `Ilaj as-Sara` was-Sihr wal-`Ayn, p. 64.
- The one who makes this claim may be lying in order to attain some worldly goal – such as getting time off work or to achieve some worldly gain – or to be relieved of some responsibility that has been placed on his shoulders.
Ustadh Usamah ibn Yasin al-Ma`ani (may Allah grant him success) – who is a specialist in ruqyah – said: Before we conclude our discussion on the steps of treatment, it is essential to explain an important issue having to do with the claims made in some cases of epilepsy, black magic, the evil eye and so on, which are made for personal reasons that may be social or economic and so on… Based on that, the therapist must be very cautious, sharp-witted, insightful and intelligent, so that he will be able to tell who is telling the truth and who is lying, on the basis of his experience in this field, noting that, in some cases, a person may be able to pretend that he is sick and play that role perfectly.
Manhaj ash-Shar` fi `Ilaj al-Mass was-Sara`, p. 405.
- The case may be genuine, and there may actually be black magic or the evil eye that the patient is suffering from.
Secondly:
If what this woman feels is really happening, then in that case she is affected by what is called “infatuation of a jinni” or “infatuation due to black magic”, which means that an evil jinni is causing her trouble because he is infatuated with her, or she has been the subject of black magic, which led to an evil jinni becoming infatuated with her and harming her by doing to her what she has spoken of.
Shaykh `Abdullah al-Jibrin (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked:
I know someone who complains about something, which is that when he goes to sleep he feels – when he is lying on his bed – that a woman is having intercourse with him. This is happening a great deal to him, as a result of which he ejaculates. He asked about that, and some people told him that a female jinni may be having intercourse with him. Is this true? Is it possible for humans to have intercourse with the jinn and to marry them? What is the ruling on that?
He replied:
This could happen to men and women. What it means is that a jinni takes on a human form that is complete in all aspects, and nothing can prevent him from having intercourse with a human female unless she protects herself by reciting the adhkar, du`a’s and daily litanies (awrad) that are mentioned in sound religious texts. This happens more to women, and even if a woman seeks refuge from the jinni, he will be able to have physical contact with her. And it is possible for a female jinni to take on a human form that is complete in all aspects, and come into physical contact with a man until she provokes his desire, and he feels that he is having intercourse with her and that he ejaculates as a result of that.
Al-Fatawa adh-Dhahabiyyah fir-Ruqa ash-Shar`iyyah, p. 199.
There is a remedy for the problem that this woman is suffering, so she must adhere to the following steps that we recommend, and we ask Allah to grant her healing and well-being:
- Reciting Ayat al-Kursiy before going to sleep.
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) put me in charge of guarding the collected zakah of Ramadan. Someone came and started to scoop up some of the food. I took hold of him and said: I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)… He [the one who came and took some of the food] said: When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursiy and you will be protected by Allah, and no devil will come near you until morning. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “He told you the truth even though he is a liar; that was a devil.”
Narrated by al-Bukhari (3101) in mu`allaq majzum report; and by an-Nasa’i in `Amal al-Yawm wal-Laylah (p. 533).
- Reciting the last two verse of Surat al-Baqarah every night.
It was narrated that Abu Mas`ud al-Badri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever recites the two verses at the end of Soorat al-Baqarah during the night, they will suffice him.”
Narrated by al-Bukhari (3786) and Muslim (808).
An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Regarding the Prophet’s words, “Whoever recites the two verses at the end of Soorat al-Baqarah during the night, they will suffice him,” it was said that what is meant is that they will suffice him and take the place of praying qiyam; and it was said that it means that they will suffice him against the Shaytan, or against sickness.
And it may be that the meaning includes all of these.
Sharh Muslim, 6/91, 92.
- Offering the supplication mentioned in the following hadith every morning and evening:
It was narrated that `Uthman ibn `Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever says in the morning of every day and in the evening of every night: ‘Bismillah illadhi la yadurru ma`a ismihi shay’un fi’l-ard wa la fi’s-sama’ wa huwa al-samee` ul-`aleem (In the name of Allah with Whose name nothing can harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing)’, three times, nothing will harm him.”
Narrated and classed as authentic by at-Tirmidhi (3388); also narrated by Abu Dawud (5088) and Ibn Majah (3869).
- Perfuming one’s body with musk or other types of perfume, applying it specifically to the area between the navel and the knee, so as to put the devils off.
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
There is a special quality in perfume, which is that the angels love it and the devils are repulsed by it. What the devils like best is foul and nasty odours. Thus good souls love good fragrances, and evil souls love foul odours, and each soul is inclined towards what is most appropriate for it, for
{Wicked women are for wicked men, and wicked men are for wicked women. And virtuous women are for virtuous men, and virtuous men are for virtuous women} [An-Nur 24:26].
This – what is mentioned in the verse – even though it speaks about men and women, it also includes deeds, words, food, drink, clothing and fragrances, either on the basis of its general wording [in Arabic] or its general meaning.
Zad al-Ma`ad fi Hadiy Khayr al-`Ibad, 4/279-280.
- Adhering to the commands of Allah, may He be Exalted, and keeping away from what is prohibited, because that will lead to strengthening her faith and help to drive the devils away from her.
Shaykh `Abdullah al-Jibrin (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
The way to protect oneself from their evil is to be cautious, offer supplication (du`a’), remember Allah (dhikr), recite the litanies (awrad) that are narrated in the religious texts, constantly do righteous deeds and keep away from prohibited things. And Allah knows best.
Al-Fatawa adh-Dhahabiyyah fir-Ruqa ash-Shar`iyyah, p. 199.
Thirdly:
We would like to point out to the sister who is afflicted by that that she must do ghusl if she sees any wetness.
Zayn al-`Abidin ibn Nujaym (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
If she says: I have a jinni who comes to me repeatedly when I am asleep, and I feel what I feel when my husband has intercourse with me, she does not have to do ghusl. In Fat-h al-Qadir it says: It is very clear that this applies only if she does not see any wetness. But if she is certain that she has seen wetness, then she must do ghusl, as in the case of a wet dream.
Al-Bahr ar-Rahiq, 1/60.
This is the view of the Hanafis and Malikis, as noted in Al-Mawsu`at al-Fiqhiyyah, 31/202.
And Allah knows best.
